Caring for Others in Our Lady's Name

Society of Joseph

It all started more than 60 years ago when a group of 17 men formed the charitable Society of Joseph to help support the Franciscan Missionary Brothers in their work with people in need. Now more than 400 strong, the Society comprises men of all faiths living in surrounding communities, including Eureka, Washington, Pacific and Sullivan. Pictured below is the St. Joseph Grotto at the Black Madonna Shrine.

Each year, the Society of Joseph generates tens of thousands of dollars to help support the Brothers. These funds are raised through annual contributions made by the Society’s friends, individual donations, and an annual raffle. Friends of the Society are asked to contribute about four cents per day – an annual, tax-deductible $125

All men are welcome to join the Society – to make a thoughtful committment–and to experience the fellowship and rewards of charitable work. The Society has an annual dinner which celebrates more than six decades of compassionate help for the Brothers in their work.

“To help ensure that the Society of Joseph remains viable for years to come, we encourage people in the communities we serve to join this very worthwhile organization,” said the director general of the Franciscan Missionary Brothers. “For many years, the support that this group provides to us has been important in our ability to carry out our apostolic endeavors. And, we hope you’ll consider becoming a part of the Society.”

The Franciscan Brothers

The Need for Help

Have you ever needed help? It seems we all have at one time or another. And, thankfully, we are often able to find a caring person to assist us in some way -- whether it's by lending an ear or lending a helping hand. Just as you've sometimes needed help, many others are in need as well. Men and women of all faiths -- from all walks of life. People who need special care in order to lead their lives amidst the difficulties of illness and old age.

And, that's where the Franciscan Missionary Brothers come into the picture. They've helped thousands of people by providing compassionate, specialized care that meets many of the needs of those they have served.

But, like everyone else, the Brothers need help, too. Ever grateful for the blessings that have been bestowed upon them, the Franciscan Missionary Brothers are fortunate to have the support of kind and generous people like those who belong to the Society of Joseph.

For many, the need for help is ongoing. Such is the case with the people for whom the Brothers provide care on a continuing basis. And, such is the case for the Brothers themselves -- who rely upon the compassion of the hundreds of men who proudly form the Society of Joseph.

Dedicated Volunteers

Society of Josephines

The role of dedicated volunteers has played a significant part in the Brothers' work. From the time of their first opening a facility in the 1920s to this day, thousands of people have generously donated their time and provided financial support for the care given at the Brothers' nursing home.

In 1936, the Society of Josephines was founded as a non-sectarian organization of women. Their support benefits those in need, assisting the Brothers as they strive to carry forward their apostolic endeavors.

The fellowship of this group is rewarding to its members. In addition to the satisfaction that derives from selfless giving, friends of the Society share in a common dedication to helping the Brothers.

All are welcome to join the Society. Nominal yearly dues of $15 are paid to the Society, along with any additional contribution that members care to make.

Society of Women

Helping Brothers Care for Others

"To help ensure that the Society remains viable for years to come, we encourage people in the communities we serve to join this very worthwhile organization," said the Brothers' director general. "For many years, the support that this group provides to us has been important in our ability to serve people in need -- as well as other work such as operating and maintaining the Black Madonna Shrine and Grottos, which welcome thousands of visitors each year. And, we hope you'll consider becoming a part of the Society of Josephines."
